Google is introducing new guidelines to increase the consistency of apps on the Play Store.

Google Play Store will show trending and non-trending apps

Google also released revised rules and recommendations to increase software consistency and discovery for consumers in a renewed effort to sanitise its Play Store.

App titles, icons, and developer names that do not comply with the new rules will not be permitted on Google Play, according to the company.

Limiting the length of app names to 30 characters, barring keywords that indicate store results, promotion in the symbol, title, and developer name, and excluding visual features that may deceive consumers from the app icon are all part of the current package of policies.

Later this year, more information about this policy update, including compliance start dates, will be published.

"Since your app title, icon, and the developer name are the most important discovery elements on your store listing page, we are preparing to launch a new set of policies to keep these elements recognizable and unique," Google said in an update late on Friday.

With only a few hundred applications and games available when Google Play first debuted in 2008, it was simple for developers to stand out.

Audiences in over 190 countries already have access to millions of smartphones and games.

"The unique assets you provide to the Store images, video, descriptions, even your app name itself are essential to users making a decision on what to download," said Google.

"We recommend reviewing the examples of do and don't below and thinking about how these changes may impact you, so you can get ready for the upcoming policy changes," the company informed.
